This is a compilation of my tweets (NadiaE) from January 25 to February 12. Included are some tweets by other people that I retweeted. Retweets can be recognized when a tweet starts with a twitter name other than NadiaE. I felt it was important to include some retweets because they carry part of the story of each day and they indicate what I felt was important while I was tweeting.
Tuesday, January 25, 2011: The first day of Egypt’s revolution
NadiaE Nadia El-Awady
Planning on tweeting #jan25 demonstrations today in Egypt. Let’s see what happens.
NadiaE Nadia El-Awady
So where’s everyone going for today’s #jan25 demonstrations in Egypt? What is your demo location of choice for today?
NadiaE Nadia El-Awady
Off to the streets of #Cairo with my sneakers on and my camera handy. Won’t be driving car today. Hope taxis are available #jan25
NadiaE Nadia El-Awady
Police trucks at Talbiya stop in Haram. Otherwise Pyramids road normal #jan25
Arwa Salah and I meet up to go to demonstration in the neighborhood of Shobra together. We thought the demonstration in Shobra would be more exciting because of its Christian majority. Egyptian Christians had been staging many demonstrations in recent days due to the New Year’s Eve bombing of a church in Alexandria and the government halting building of a religious complex in Giza.
NadiaE Nadia El-Awady
Got into taxi. Asked him to take us to x. Showed us 3 ppl who asked him to take to demo & refused unaware that’s where WE’RE going#jan25
Arwa and I arrive in Shobra, spend some time in a sandwich shop waiting for demonstrations to start. We’re joined by our friend Adel Abdel-Ghaffar.
NadiaE Nadia El-Awady
Dawaran Shobra quiet except for lots of police #jan25
Adel gets a call from a friend. He’s told the action is in Tahrir.
NadiaE Nadia El-Awady
Leaving very quiet Shubra and off to downtown where we’re told the action is #jan25
NadiaE Nadia El-Awady

NadiaE Nadia El-Awady
@diptychal what’s happening there? Still quiet? Just realized we HAVE met!
I actually didn’t end up going out this day.
NadiaE Nadia El-Awady
#Facebook seems to be blocked in #egypt. People saying no access. I cant access either #jan25
NadiaE Nadia El-Awady
Egypt govt blocking both #twitter and #facebook shows #jan25 was a real social media revolution
NadiaE Nadia El-Awady
What egypt govt doesnt realize is that Egypt’s tweeps have all met in tweetups and we can keep connected by phone #jan25

otherwise yesterday’s demos formed of people representing themselves as egyptians and not 1 particular party/ideology. That was the beauty

Tear gas clouds rise in Tahrir. Several injured by rocks passed in front of me. One hit in eye
Clarification: in a later tweet you will find that I discovered that the tear-gas-like clouds I report here are probably insecticide emitted from an insecticide-blowing machine. I saw this machine being used by the pro-Mubarak side as I stood on a tank near the frontlines. I’m assuming they used this to cause fear.
At this stage in my tweets, a battle erupts between the pro-Mubaraks and anti-Mubaraks. Rocks litter the sky. Unfortunately, I missed the earlier stampede of camels and horses into the square. All I was able to see was the horses that were later confiscated by the army. I was too far away when they broke into the square.

NadiaE Nadia El-Awady
@theonevanished Im asking they step back. Not down. And they have done great work. But this needs to be a protest of the people. not the MB
NadiaE Nadia El-Awady
MB represent a very small % of our population. For this to be a people’s revolution, the people with all their diversity must participate

This is not a revolution against one man. This is a revolution against a whole regime and system of thinking.
NadiaE Nadia El-Awady
It will not be enough for one man to step down or step aside only to be replaced by another of the same.
NadiaE Nadia El-Awady
Protesters do not trust current regime to fulfill promises of democratic change.
NadiaE Nadia El-Awady
It is the current regime that has held rigged elections; last being in Nov 2010
NadiaE Nadia El-Awady
Current regime has left zero precedence for Egyptian people to trust a single word of theirs
NadiaE Nadia El-Awady
Reason we don’t have obvious alternative leaders to take country out of abyss is regime made sure no leaders could develop
NadiaE Nadia El-Awady
Alternative leadership in Egypt cannot possibly form until regime removed and constitution changed
NadiaE Nadia El-Awady
We will experience a difficult birthing of democracy and many mistakes will be made at first

In the early days of the revolution, Egyptian state security ordered a doorman of a building in Tahrir Square to unlock the building door…
NadiaE Nadia El-Awady
Doorman refused, saying, “I don’t know u and I am here to protect this building.” He assumed police wanted 2 put snipers on top of building

Police bashed the glass of the door then shot through the iron door frame in the building entrance.

On the same day of his release, Wael Ghonim appeared on a popular late night television show. The television presenter asked him many questions about his role in calling for the revolution, what happened to him in prison, and how he was released. She then showed him pictures of Egyptians who were killed during the revolution. He broke down crying. He apologized to the families of those who died and said that his intention in calling for the January 25 protests was not for people to die. And that “they” were the people who did this. And he got up and left the set. Wael Ghonim’s interview touched thousands of Egyptians. Many Egyptians who were still standing on the side lines up to this point were swayed by Wael’s interview and went to Tahrir the following day.

Around 10:30pm, Mubarak appeared on State-run television and gave a 17-minute long speech. The speech was projected onto a sheet hanging behind the main platform in the square. The sound coming from the speakers was not clear, so many of us called into family members at home to listen to the speech through our mobile phones. My friend Arwa and I listened to the speech on our friend’s Ahmed’s phone. All three of us struggled to hear from the one phone. As the speech went on, it became clear that Mubarak would not resign. I cried out loud in indignation “Sufficient unto us is God and how good the Trustee”. Arwa repeated the chant. We were both shushed as people wanted to listen to the rest of the speech. And as the speech ended and we looked toward the Square, our hearts broken, hope of a new Egypt diminishing, we saw people start to take off their shoes and raise them as a sign of indignation. “Look at that, Arwa!” I exclaimed. “This is priceless! This is just priceless!” And we both took off one of our shoes and raised it in the air.

Just before sunset we heard that there would be a presidential statement. I called my sister and asked her to call me when the statement comes on TV and put the phone near the television set so I could hear it. I prayed the sunset prayer along with other protesters in front of the presidential palace. My phone rang. It was my sister. Suddenly the crowds started roaring. I couldn’t hear anything on the other end. “Aisha, what are you saying? Aisha? What are you saying? I can’t hear a thing,” I said. A voice eventually reached my ear. I heard my sister faintly as the roars in the crowds around me increased, “The president resigned!” I don’t remember shutting the phone. I looked up. People were jumping and waving their flags. People were chanting. Someone was yelling, “He resigned! He resigned!” And Arwa suddenly appeared from the middle of the crowd taking her own phone off her ear. “He resigned, Nadia! He resigned!” We hugged and cried and cried and cried. We told each other “This is for the martyrs! This is for the martyrs!” I hugged a woman I had been standing next to for most of the afternoon in front of the palace. We ululated at the top of our lungs – a sound of celebration typical of Egyptian weddings. I hugged another woman standing next to me who I didn’t know. A young man who we had forced to sit down next to us earlier because he was ill with a cold and had gone sleepless for nights in Tahrir fainted at the news of Mubarak’s resignation and was carried to the local field hospital. Arwa and I started our pilgrimage towards Tahrir Square to celebrate.

Hi,
Thank you for the enormous amount of work that must have gone into this.
That last one is very, very funny.
(It really can’t be a good day when 20M people show up at your door to tell you they hate you!)
Love and peace happy Egyptian,

Dear Blogger,
Hi! This is an invitation from the Berkman Center for Internet & Society at Harvard University and Global Voices Online to participate in a survey we’re carrying out jointly. We’re asking questions about online safety for bloggers in the Middle East and North Africa, and we need your help!
We are particularly interested in learning about your experiences with social media, the steps you take to protect your privacy online, and your perceptions of online threats. We are sending surveys to approximately 600 influential bloggers throughout the region in the hopes of learning more about how bloggers view and approach the issue of online safety.
The survey will take approximately 25 minutes to complete. We will not share personal information — or the fact that you’ve participated in this survey — with anyone else, and you’ll be the first to know when we release the results of the survey. Will you help us?
